Like many classic cocktails the Negroni’s origins are disputed. The widely reported story is that in 1919 Count Camillo Negroni a local wide boy and regular at the Bar Casoni in Florence Italy, asked the bartender to liven up his then favorite Americano cocktail by replacing the soda water with gin. It hence became known as Negroni’s drink. The other tale is that it came from Milan in Northern Italy but we prefer to stick with the flamboyant Count who later spent time as a cowboy in the wild west and a gambler in New York. Orson Welles discovered the Negroni in 1947 in Rome while filming Black Magic and to recognise it’s resurgence just recently actor Stanley Tucci of The Devil Wore Prada, Captain America and a host of other movies posted a video on Instagram of him making his wife a Negroni.
